'Always somewhat atypical (which I suspect will be the case with the more modern day 2003), the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn’t changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It’s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! Don’t miss it if you are a wine lover.'

'There are hints of brick orange around the outer edges, but this is still beautifully rich red at the core, and the warmth of the vintage’s sunshine is clear from the first moment. At 34 years of age, the aromatics have almost torrefied, with beautiful burnt caramel notes oozing into rich plum and baked strawberry fruits. Gentle tannins are still holding the fruit unobtrusively but firmly in line. As the wine opens in the glass, the tobacco and cold woodsmoke become more evident, and each time you go back to the glass it gets more and more interesting, extending the conversation and keeping it new. 'From the moment it is first opened the 1982 Château Latour is magical. Deep and still vibrant in color, but showing the translucence of age, the 1982 opens with intense, soaring aromatics that hint at what is to come. One taste is all it takes to confirm that the first impression is spot-on. This bottle, from an original wood case purchased on release, is a poignant reminder of how importance provenance is. The 1982 is simply stunning in its beauty. Vivid, multi-faceted and totally sensual, the Latour captures all the best qualities of this famous vintage. In 1982 yields were high, there was essentially none of the sorting that has become de rigueur, and cellar practices were far less ideal on paper than they are today. And yet, the 1982 is simply stunning. What else can I ask for in a wine? Absolutely nothing. Except for a hope to run into it again. Well-stored bottles will keep for another two decades, although my impression is that the 1982 is not going to improve much from here. Actually, it can’t improve. This is as good as wine gets.'

'Zu den größten Weinen des Jahrgangs gehört Latour. Zum ersten Mal habe ich diesen Wein 1987 aus einer 24 Stunden vorher dekantierten Magnum getrunken. Für mich als damals noch ziemlich unerfahrenen Weintrinker war das eine völlig neue Dimension, die mich sprachlos machte. Klar, dass ich dieses großartige Erlebnis wiederholen wollte, doch bis Mitte der Neunziger zeigte sich der 82er Latour doch sehr verschlossen. 1997 in Hannover dann Powerfarbe, edelrustikal, Bitterschokolade, Röstaromen, dick, unglaubliche Kraft, habe blind auf Leo 82 getippt (wegen Farbe und Dicke), zeigte im Abgang viel Kraft und noch maskierte Süße -98/100. Danach mehrere Flaschen auf ähnlichem Niveau. 2001 auf einer CeBit Best Bottle rabenschwarz, ganz dichte Cabernetfrucht, öffnet sich schon ganz zögerlich, braucht aber zur vollen Entfaltung sicher noch 10+ Jahre, so schmecken 100 Punkte! 2001 riesengroß aber chancenlos gegen Mouton. 2003 in einer Probe erstaunlich trinkreif, aber mit irrem Druck am Gaumen, langer Abgang und immer noch massive Tannine - 98/100. 2004 dann erst eine noch verdammt junge halbe Flasche und anschließend im Sommer 2004 mein bisher faszinierendstes Latour-Erlebnis. Einen Abend lang 82 gegen 70 Latour getrunken. Das ging immer hin und her. Mal lag der etwas druckvollere 70er vorne, mal der etwas fruchtigere 82er. Zum Schluß gab es einen knappen Sieg auf der Ziellinie für 70 Latour, aber für beide Weine auf deutlichem 100 Punkte Niveau. Im Sommer 2005 konnte ich beide Weine noch einmal in einer Probe vergleichen. Da lag der 70er für mich deutlich vorne. 1982 ist je nach bisheriger Lagerung einfach noch zu jung, hat aber enormes Potential und kann sich bis über das Jahr 2050 hinaus entwickeln. 2009 irre Nase mit der kompletten Palette der Medoc –Aromen, von der reifen Johannisbeer- und Brombeerfrucht über Leder, Tabak, Zedernholz, Lakritz, Teer bis hin zur bei großen Latours immer sehr prägnanten, leicht bitteren Walnuss, sehr komplex, vielschichtig und einfach faszinierend. Am Gaumen immer noch mächtige Tannine, die guten Flaschen sicher noch 30+ Jahre Entwicklung garantieren. Dazu eine ungeheure, aromatische Dichte, da ist jetzt nicht der Gaumen als Aromen-sezierendes Messinstrument gefragt, hier sind angesichts eines solchen Monuments eher so etwas wie Andacht und Demut angesagt, oder einfach nur ein schieres Glücksgefühl, großartiger Wein mit endlosem Abgang – 100/100. Perfekt auch 2010. Auf René Gabriels 82*82 2012 aus der Magnum tiefe, undurchdringliche Farbe, Traumnase mit perfekter Frucht, mit Leder, Tabak, Teer, Trüffeln, Zedernholz, Lakritz und der für Latour so typischen, leicht bitteren Walnuss, sehr komplex, vielschichtig und immer neue Facetten zeigend, am Gaumen geradezu explosive, druckvolle Aromatik und ewige Länge, fraglos ein Jahrhundertwein – 100/100. Und 2014 noch 2mal auf diesem unglaublichen Niveau. Aber 2015 auch eine Flasche mit Kraft und Länge ohne Ende, aber auch noch sehr verschlossen – WT95+. 2016 aus der Magnum die jüngere Variante des 70ers. Ein blutjunges Monument, das mit dieser irren Dichte einen derartigen Druck erzeugte. Latour mag anders gehen, aber sicher nicht besser – WT100. 2018 aus einer perfekt gelagerten OHK so ein gewaltiges, blutjunges Monument, ein schlafender Gigant zum Weitervererben – WT97+. 2019 aus der 1tel ein sehr junger Latour in Perfektion – WT100.'
