'The 2013 Smith-Haut-Lafitte has a composed and quite refined bouquet, certainly one of the best that I have encountered on the Left Bank, with wild strawberry mixed with cedar and a touch of graphite. The palate is smooth on the entry, the oak nicely integrated, almost Pinot-like in texture with a prickle of spice on the finish. Recommended for the vintage, this constitutes a very respectable Pessac-Léognan from the Cathiard family in what was a difficult vintage.'

'One of the most exciting wines of the year, the 2013 Smith Haut Lafitte graces the palate with an exotic melange of dark red/black fruit, violets, menthol, new leather, crushed rocks and dried herbs. The 2013 doesn't have the grip or structure of the very best years, but it is nevertheless striking and will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. This is an especially tender, young Smith Haut Lafitte. The 2013 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.'

'Die Besitzer Florence und Daniel Cathiard, ein Energie versprühendes Ehepaar, das sehr, sehr viel für das neue Ansehen, besonders zwischen den beiden Gemeinden Martillac und Léognan getan hat. Es ist auch nicht ganz klar, ob die aufwendigen Renovationen in und am Weingut sich eines Tages bezahlt machen, oder ob das ganze Unterfangen dereinst als teures Hobby abgebucht werden muss. Der rote Smith-Haut-Lafitte ist das, was ich an den grossen Weinen südlich der Stadt Bordeaux am meisten schätze: Finesse, Eleganz und Balance. Manchmal wird das von weindummen Menschen als zu leicht empfunden. Dabei ist gerade ein alter Domaine de Chevalier und Haut-Bailly etwas ganz Delikates. Und genau so werden auch die neuen Smith-Haut-Lafitte-Weine (ab Jahrgang 1995) einmal schmecken, wenn die Flaschenreife erreicht ist. Die Rebfläche ist ein einziges, fast quadratisches Stück Rebland und umfasst 45 ha, die mit 55 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot und 10 % Cabernet Franc bepflanzt sind.'
