'The 1996 white Hermitage averaged 14.3% alcohol naturally. Every cuvee from Peleat, Rocoule, and L'Hermite produced wines of extraordinary power and intensity, but a level of acidity that Chave rarely sees, especially when combined with such intense fruit and power. This should be a classic, although I am not sure it will surpass the other-worldly 1995. Chave's white wine always went through full malolactic, but now there is batonage (stirring the lees), as well as more barrel fermentation and a greater percentage of new oak. I have always loved Chave's white Hermitage, and have been buying it consistently since the 1978 vintage. However, I must say that if the 1994 signaled a new level of quality, the 1995 and 1996 continue that, with both vintages producing blockbuster white Hermitages that possess the texture of a great white Burgundy, in addition to extraordinary intensity and richness. Americans have never taken a liking to white Hermitage, but it ages as well as the red, and if you do not drink it during the first 2-3 years after the vintage, it is best to wait for two decades to consume it as it goes through a long, stubborn, dumb period.'

Die Weine von der Domaine Chave sind ebenso rar wie legendär. Seit 1481, also seit über 600 Jahren produziert die Familie, heute geführt von Jean-Louis Chave, die Referenz für große Weine aus Syrah. Alle großen Weinkritiker und Experten, sei es aus Frankreich, England oder den USA, verneigen sich vor ihrer großen Leistung über Jahrhunderte.  Da die Weine aus der Domaine Chave immer ausverkauft und in die kleine Produktion von ca. 2.000 Kisten/Jahr strengstens limitiert sind, hat Jean-Louis vor einigen Jahren damit begonnen, unter dem Namen 'Jean-Louis Chave Sélection' klassische Rhôneweine zu produzieren, für die er als Négociant die Trauben bei befreundeten Winzern aus besten Lagen selektiert und dann nach seinen Vorstellungen vinifiziert. Die daraus bisher erzielten Ergebnisse lassen Großes erwarten! Dennoch geht nichts über einen Hermitage Rouge oder Blanc der Domaine. Nach mind. 10-20 Jahren Reifezeit werden sie zu unvergesslichen Wein-Erlebnissen.
