'A retasting of the 1998 Hermitage blanc confirmed its brilliant quality. It is an elegant, floral-scented, structured white Hermitage. It boasts fabulous concentration, but is less flattering and precocious than either the 1999 or 2000. If the latter two wines lean toward a flamboyant style, the 1998 should prove to be one of the more muscular, long lived, backward efforts requiring patience.'

'I wish I had more opportunities to drink Hermitage Blanc, as I adore the wines, especially with some bottle age. Chave´s 1998 is distinctly ripe and tropical in style. Peach, apricot pit, savory herbs, honey and mint emerge, but it is the wine´s racy, extroverted personality that is front and center. I imagine the 1998 will drink well for a number of years to come, although I don´t expect to see it improve materially. Still, the 1998 is very pretty, especially in the way its raciness pairs with the bold, lusty flavors in the pastas.'

This has aged beautifully with the fat rendering from the palate over time to deliver a composed and smooth-edged core of melons, minerals and a fresh, toasty finish. Die Weine von der Domaine Chave sind ebenso rar wie legendär. Seit 1481, also seit über 600 Jahren produziert die Familie, heute geführt von Jean-Louis Chave, die Referenz für große Weine aus Syrah. Alle großen Weinkritiker und Experten, sei es aus Frankreich, England oder den USA, verneigen sich vor ihrer großen Leistung über Jahrhunderte.  Da die Weine aus der Domaine Chave immer ausverkauft und in die kleine Produktion von ca. 2.000 Kisten/Jahr strengstens limitiert sind, hat Jean-Louis vor einigen Jahren damit begonnen, unter dem Namen 'Jean-Louis Chave Sélection' klassische Rhôneweine zu produzieren, für die er als Négociant die Trauben bei befreundeten Winzern aus besten Lagen selektiert und dann nach seinen Vorstellungen vinifiziert. Die daraus bisher erzielten Ergebnisse lassen Großes erwarten! Dennoch geht nichts über einen Hermitage Rouge oder Blanc der Domaine. Nach mind. 10-20 Jahren Reifezeit werden sie zu unvergesslichen Wein-Erlebnissen.
