Spätburgunder oder auch Pinot Noir, er wird zur Burgunderfamilie gerechnet und wurde aus dem Burgund an die Ahr gebracht. Die meisten Spätburgunderreben stehen in Baden, aber auch in Rheinhessen, die Pfalz und Würtemberg. Damit ist der Spätburgunder die am meisten angebaute Rotweinsorte in Deutschland.
Die vermutlich aus Frankreich genauer der Gegend um Bordeaux stammende Rotweinsorte Merlot, ist bis heute eine der 6 Rebsorten die für Rotweine im Bordeaux verwendet werden dürfen. Oft sind die Weine erst nach einigen Jahren Lagerung genussreif. Bekannt ist der Merlot auch als: Alicante noir, Médoc Noir, Merlau, Merlaut, Merlaut noir, Merle Petite, Merlô, Merlot Noir, Merlot black, Merlot blauer, Merlot nero, Merlott, Merlou, Odzalesi und Petit Merle. Um nur einige Synonyme aufzuzählen.
Diese mit ca. 240.000 Hektar am vierthäufigsten Verbaute Weinsorte, ist in Frankreich auch als Grenache noire und in Spanien als Granacha bzw. Garnatxa (Katalonien) bekannt. Die Weine sind arm an Farbe und Tanninen und liefert gute fruchtige Weine, sie kann, so z.B. in Kalifornien, auch als Weiß- oder Roséwein gekeltert werden. Oft wird die Grenache mit tanninhaltigeren Rebsorten wie Syrah oder Tempranillo verschnitten, da sie alkoholreich und dennoch weich ist.
